After a decade of rumours and false starts, HBO has confirmed that Deadwood is heading to the big screen.

HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has confirmed that Deadwood creator David Milch’s pitch has been greenlit, and that things are moving forward on the film. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be – and knowing David that could change. But it’s going to happen.”

Powers Boothe, a prolific character actor on the small and big screen, died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 68.

According to his rep, Boothe died in his sleep Sunday morning of natural causes.

The veteran actor was best known for playing snarling villains like Curly Bill Brocious in the 1993 Western “Tombstone” and saloon owner Cy Tolliver in HBO’s “Deadwood.”

Al Swearengen

There’s been some movement on HBO’s long-gestating Deadwood revival, according to Al Swearengen himself.

Series creator David Milch’s “two-hour movie script has been delivered to HBO,” Ian McShane reveals to TVLine exclusively, before adding with a laugh, “If they don’t deliver [a finished product], blame them.”

McShane, who has a starring role in Starz’ American Gods (premiering April 30), says he’s spoken to Milch “about some of” the script.

In unexpectedly great news, HBO has announced that they’re going ahead with a third season of their detective anthology series “True Detective,” and have brought in a steady hand to help creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto.

That hand? David Milch, the creator of the network’s iconic western series “Deadwood” according to EW. So far, Pizzolatto has reportedly penned at least the first two episodes of the new season.

DEADWOOD | Romantics would have us believe that Calamity Martha Jane Canary, who rode into Deadwood in the summer of 1876 with Wild Bill Hickok and Colorado Charlie Utter, was a fragrant, mild-mannered frontier scout and sharpshooter welcomed into the fledgling, woman-starved mining camp.

Actress Doris Day, renowned for her portrayal of virtuous women, even portrayed her as such in the 1953 comedic-musical-romance movie, “Calamity Jane,” a real buckskin-clad woman forced to rescue her love interest from Native Americans.
